Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s thin, neatly trimmed goatee has long been a trademark of his look.
A few years ago, however, this same goatee caused quite a stir when the undefeated champion posted a photo showing tiny red dots in his beard area, triggering speculation of a beard transplant.
To find out if Floyd Mayweather’s beard transplant really happened, let’s look closer.
Who Is Floyd Mayweather?
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is an American boxer and five-division world champion who is widely regarded as one of the best defensive fighters of all time.
Boxing since the age of 7, he became a Golden Gloves champion in 1993 when he was just 16 years old — he even won the title 3 years in a row. Now, the boxing legend boasts a stellar career record, having retired with an unbeaten record of 50-0.
Mayweather has since been doing exhibition bouts, with his last one ending in a no-contest against John Gotti III.
Did Floyd Mayweather Get A Beard Transplant?
Floyd Mayweather’s beard photos from the end of 2020 suggest that he did indeed get a beard transplant, even though he hasn’t confirmed it.
In the past, Mayweather’s beard was sparse and patchy. However, he posted a picture of himself in 2020 with small red dots on his cheeks and chin that looked eerily similar to newly transplanted grafts.
Just a few months later, Mayweather’s beard line was much higher and straighter, and it appeared much fuller and denser than before. It is, therefore, safe to assume that the boxer had a beard transplant.
How Was Floyd Mayweather’s Beard Transplant Done?
Mayweather’s beard transplant was quite possibly done using the FUE technique, with the back of his scalp serving as the donor area.
The process involves extracting small bundles of hair from the back of the scalp, called hair grafts. Through small incisions, these grafts are then placed into the beard region.
It is also possible to harvest grafts from the scalp via strip harvesting, also known as FUT, which involves cutting out a piece of skin first and then extracting grafts from it.
One of the major concerns about this technique, however, is that it can leave a noticeable (linear) scar at the back of the scalp. When you keep your hair short, such a scar is easily visible.
Even with his buzzcut after the alleged beard transplant, Mayweather did not show any such scarring, which suggests that FUE was used.
How Many Grafts Did He Need For His Beard Transplant?
It appears that Floyd Mayweather’s beard transplantation involved around 2500-3000 grafts, according to the photo he posted of himself.
The number of grafts needed for a beard transplant per cheek may range from 350 to 1,000, whereas the number of grafts needed for a lower lip transplant may range from 50 to 500.
Graft counts vary depending on several factors, including donor area strength, desired density, existing beard hair, and aesthetic goals.

Reactions To Floyd Mayweather’s Beard Transplant
There were a couple of high-profile celebrities who noticed and reacted to Floyd Mayweather’s beard transplant.
Podcast host and UFC commentator Joe Rogan reportedly commented on it, saying:
“I think Floyd Mayweather got a face transplant. I think he got a hair transplant on his cheeks. Oh! s**t Floyd, because it wasn’t until he was like forty years old. That all of a sudden he had a beard like he always had, you know, a little goatee. But he never had a beard and now he went to Turkey. I think. They do a lot of them for some reason, they do a lot of them in Turkey.”
Additionally, 50 Cent took to Instagram to post the following, which he later deleted:
“This just shows that being one of the toughest men of all time, with 900 million in the bank and looking great bald, still does not compensate for not having hair”
As for Redditors, they couldn’t hold back either.
“This just shows that being one of the toughest men of all time, with 900 million in the bank and looking great bald, still does not compensate for not having hair”
“Never really like the guy but I give him mad respect for doing this and posting about it! Let’s normalize transplants!!”
“He might have done it in Turkey to avoid all the media and sensationalism that would have resulted if he had done it in the US, news would have spread like fire.”
